The ‘landscape’ is the canvas for our everyday lives, explains architect Michael Karpanch.
Michael Karpancch, one of the leading landscape architects in India, explains why he chose the term landscape art.
He explains that the word ‘landscape’ is a general term used to describe any area that includes many plants and trees, but also a range of other structures that are designed for use in landscape settings, such as trees, plants, roads, parks and buildings.
The word ‘art’ in the sense of landscape is a different one, says Michael Karsanch.
The word ‘Art’ means something different, says Karsancch.
‘Landscape’ means a space of an art, he explains.
‘Art’ is not limited to architecture.
Landscape is a concept, not a construction, says architect Michael.
‘Artistic landscape’ is another term.
The ‘artistic landscape’, he says, is a space that is not built on an area of land, but is a piece of architecture or landscape design.
The term ‘landcover’ is an English translation of the Sanskrit word ‘varna’, which means ‘land’, according to Karsanches dictionary of word origins.
It is used in a broader sense, meaning that there are different kinds of landscape, he says.
‘The landscape is the place of the living space.
It’s the environment, it’s the natural environment, the natural world, the social environment, all these different elements that make up the landscape.
The word landscape is not just a term for a specific area.
The landscape can be viewed as a continuum.
It encompasses everything from hills, valleys and mountains to forest and grassland.
‘A landscape is also a collection of elements, each one of which is designed to be useful for a particular purpose, says Srinivas Ramesh, the director of the National Landscape Centre.’
For example, in our houses, we are building the house with different materials, such the stone foundation, and then the wood base.
Each element contributes to its own purpose.
The stones and the wood will be used to make the house.
But also the landscape will be an environment that we live in, an environment where we have to live in harmony.’
The landscape is the environment in which we live,’ says Rameshs expert.
‘In order to create a harmonious atmosphere in our home, we need to construct a landscape that is balanced and balanced, says Ramashe, the architect.’
We need to maintain the balance of all the elements.
We need to create an environment in balance.
So the balance is created through building the environment that is both harmonious and balanced,’ says Karpach.
While the word landscape has become part of the lexicon of architecture, in the real world, it is rarely used, says Arunachalam Nandita from the University of Hyderabad.
He explains that when it comes to the word, it often comes from a different context.
It comes from the Hindi word for landscape, nandita which means to ‘sculpt’.
The nanditas meaning of landscape was coined in the 1980s by Dr. Keshav Prasad Chatterjee, who is now professor of architectural history at the Institute of Architecture, Hyderabad, says Nanditas Dictionary of Symbols and Phrases of the English Language, a resource on Sanskrit.
Nandits Dictionary of Sanskrit defines the word as ‘the landscape’ that is designed and constructed for a purpose.
Nanditas dictionary describes the concept of ‘land cover’ as ‘a landscape that includes the surrounding area, a forest, grassland, or a park, as well as an environment.’
It describes the word to mean ‘a part of an area that is built up around or in a continuous series of units of a building or structure.’
The word landscape in its various forms has been around for over two millennia.
This term, however, does not mean a place where the landscape is divided into separate parts, says Professor Nandities Dictionary of Hindi and English.
It means the whole, including the parts that are within it, he adds.
Landscape is not a fixed set of elements.
It can be defined in many different ways, says Prof Nandity, adding that the term is a very subjective term.’
It is a construct.
There is no fixed definition of landscape,’ says Prof. Nanda.
