“If you were in my position, I think you’d look at me and say, ‘What is this guy doing?’
You’d think I was nuts.”–Michael Jordan, talking about how he and Michael Douglas are the two best basketball players ever, after he became a father for the first time.
And if you were a young kid growing up in the early 1980s, you would say, “That’s me.
But I was lucky.
I got to see Michael Jordan and be able to play with him.
I could play with those guys, too.
I was fortunate enough to get to see them play.
I saw Michael Jordan in the summertime in the gym, and I loved the way he played.
When I saw him in the winter, I could watch him run in the snow and snowboards.
And that’s what I loved about him.
He had such a great spirit.
He was just a great athlete.
He didn’t really know what he wanted to do, and he just went out and did it.
So, I love him, but at the same time, I’m just happy to have had the opportunity to play alongside him and be around him and watch him and learn from him.
I was in New York, and a few months before he died, I went to his house and had dinner with his family.
And I told him, “We have to talk to him about his basketball career.
I have to tell him that you were not a great player, but you were still able to be a great person.
And when you had a career, I just think about all the people who are in your position.
You could have ended up a millionaire.
But you chose the life you have and chose to be your best self.
I’m happy for you.”
And I think he was really touched by that.
I remember when I was a little kid, when I started my career in the NBA, I always had this image of what I was supposed to be.
And then I was like, “I just want to be the best at what I do.”
I was happy to be in the role I had, but when I got into the NBA I just thought, “How am I supposed to do this?
I can’t do this!”
So I wanted to be as good as I could be.
But I didn’t want to just be the worst at everything, so I kind of had to figure out a way to be one of these guys that people want to look up to.
And, you know, if I was to come out today and tell you that I’ve been to New York and I’ve seen Michael Jordan play, you’d probably say, I want to do that too.
So I want people to know that I’m still here and I’m in the spotlight.
And people want a player that’s like that, but they don’t necessarily want to see that.
And I don’t think he ever really looked down on himself.
I think if I went back to the time I was playing in high school, there was a time when I would say that he was the worst person that I’d ever played against.
And he was always in the shadow of Michael Jordan.
So he was a big influence on me and I really appreciate what he did.
But, you can only really compare him to Michael Jordan, and then you compare him against Kobe Bryant, who is the best player that I have ever played with, and the greatest player that ever lived.
So that’s why I’m so grateful to have him as my teammate and as a teammate, and that’s the way I’m going to look at him.
It’s gonna be different for me when he’s gone.
But yeah, I’ve always been thankful for him.
But then I would go into the office and he’d say something, and it would be like, What’s up?
And then it would go on for another hour and then I’d say, What did you do today?
And it would start again.
He would just say something that was just so genuine.
And it’s so funny, because now I’m playing with him and I think I’ve gotten to know him so well.
And as I get older, I’ll be like: Wow, I really have met a lot of great players.
He is the only one that I can say is as close as you can get to Michael in my opinion.
